Thames Discovery Programme run a year-round programme of activities exploring the archaeology of the river on the foreshore, around London and online.

Public Guided Walks

Take part in one of our public guided walks and explore fascinating archaeology running through the heart of London, from prehistory to the present day and see the city from a very different perspective. Our walks are led by an archaeologist from Thames Discovery Programme and take place at sites across London. They help support our work to monitor and record the vulnerable archaeology of the Thames foreshore.

Our public guided walks are suitable for anyone aged 8 and over, under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. We also run regular family walks for all ages.

COVID-Secure Activities

image

The safety of all our staff, volunteers and participants is our priority. All our activities are run with a COVID-secure risk assessment, in line with current guidance. We comply with the ‘We’re Good To Go’ Visit England industry standard for activities during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Guided walks can take place with more than six people, provided participants do not mix in groups larger than six. To make sure we can run safely and have a good experience, we have reduced the number of participants on each walk and we will organise you into smaller groups of no more than 6 people at the start of the event.

Do:

• Book tickets for all the members of your party – including children
• Follow the instructions of the Walk Leaders at all times
• Practice good hand hygiene during the event, we’ll provide hand sanitiser and gloves for you to use.
• Observe 2 metres social distancing at all times
• Wear a face covering if you prefer

Don’t:

• Come if you have COVID-19 symptoms, if you or someone in your household has had a positive test, or if you’ve been told to self-isolate (see below for our refund policy)
• Come in a group larger than 6 (unless you’re a larger household or support bubble). We will turn you away.
• Share equipment and pass around artefacts

Our walks are extremely popular and usually sell out, please let us know as soon as possible if you’re not able to attend. We’ll refund anyone who cancels their place up to 24 hours before the start of the event.

We’ll give you a full refund, before or after the event, if you’re unable to attend because you have COVID-19 symptoms, you or someone in your household has had a positive test, or you have been told to self-isolate.

If the foreshore area is busy and it will be difficult for the walk group to socially distance, we may move to another nearby site (no more than 15 minutes walk away). The Walk Leader will decide this on the day after meeting you at the meeting point.

We will cancel any activities that are scheduled when Tier 3 – Very High level restrictions are in place. We’ll review the situation for individual walks two weeks before the event to decide whether we will go ahead.

If we cancel a walk, we’ll refund your order. We will also keep your details on file, and give you priority booking for any new walks we organise, once restrictions are lifted. But just to let you know, we don’t anticipate announcing new walks until the New Year.

Get in touch to book!

Thanks to funding from City Bridge Trust and Tideway, we can offer free walks for many London-based community organisations, schools and youth groups. If you don’t qualify for a free walk, we charge an affordable fee to cover our costs. We can tailor our walks to suit your group and your interests. Contact us to find out more.

We plan our walks around the most suitable tides to give you the best foreshore experience. The more flexibility you have about dates, the better.
