Ancient Crafts and Technologies
A week-long course giving you the opportunity to explore ancient crafts and technologies from a hands-on point of view. Based at the Iron Age Activity Centre at Michelham Priory, the course covers pottery, wood working, textiles, building technologies, boat building and flint knapping.
The crafts and technologies covered will be: – pottery – pot building, kiln building, pot firing – textiles – weaving, spinning, dyeing – wood working – early lathes, wood splitting, cleaving – building technologies – timber work, thatching – flint knapping – boat building – making coracles
Students will explore aspects of these technologies by reconstructing them using carefully designed archaeological evidence based on material found in Bronze Age, Iron Age and Saxon excavations.
It is advisable to be equipped for all weather, so please wear suitable outdoor clothing (old clothes) and waterproof, strong walking shoes or boots. You should bring a waterproof jacket as well as UV barrier cream and a sun hat. You should bring plenty of water to drink and you may want to include a packed lunch. You will need a hard-backed notebook and a pencil.
