Presented by Eastside Community Heritage

The history of the founding of the Coloured Men’s Institute in Canning Town is a history of a forgotten community brought together by Pastor Kamal Chunchie. This film documents his life and work and considers his legacy in relation to the work of similar institutions in East London today. A relatively untold story of London’s Docklands, West Ham’s early Black community, Eastside Community Heritage’s new film seeks to reflect the life and times, the work and togetherness of a community undeterred by racism and poverty.

Presented as part of the East End Film Festival 2010. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, as part of the Story of London 2009.
