An Exhibition in the Archaeology in Action Gallery

The Thames Discovery Programme has provided thousands of people with access to the foreshore and the chance to discover their own piece of London’s rich archaeological heritage.

The artefacts displayed in Lost and Found in the River Thames were all discovered during guided walks, school visits, training sessions and fieldwork. They provide evidence of many aspects of people’s lives on the Thames over thousands of years. The exhibition was curated by Mike Webber.

Artefacts on display include the Roman intaglio found on the Southwark foreshore and adopted as the Thames Discovery Programme logo, and this sprig mould, found by an eight year old schoolchild at Vauxhall. The mould was used during the Victorian period to make decorations that were stuck onto pottery. This job was often done by children, some as young as 8.

The work of the Foreshore Recording and Observation Group is also showcased in a short film which includes images of the FROG members undertaking fieldwork across Greater London.
