Linking Landscapes and Place Names

It was interesting to find out more about the history of the area where I live, and information about where to find out more…it helped to put some of the fieldwork in context…..working in a team with others, discussion and pooling ideas…..thinking about who was doing the naming and why…..it was quite fascinating looking at maps in a different way….I loved the walk….talking about how place names come about and change……I liked the opportunity to work with, discuss and learn from different groups of people….All very interesting and thought provoking……I loved all the reference books…..I thought it was excellent!

On Saturday 29th January 2011, the Thames Discovery Programme held a Riverpedia workshop on the subject of place names at University College London. The day was a mixture of presentations and small group activities including ‘What’s your name and where do you come from?’, a Place Names Lucky Dip and map regression exercises on case study areas in London.

We also went for a walk to explore part of Fitzrovia – but this was somewhat curtailed due to the Arctic weather conditions!

The FROG Guide to Using Place-Names is now available on the FROG Network and the presentation from the day is available here
